Daily File Management

Sep 26th 2007

File management in Mac is pretty.. painful.. I just can’t stand the “simpleness” of the Finder.

I often ended up opening Finder windows that occupy my entire desktop, just because I want to move/copy files between various places. The process gets even harder because Finder doesn’t sort files/folders based on their types, but their names. So, whatever files you have, if it starts with a Z it’ll be down below. This can be very, very inconvenient if you have tens, or hundreds of files or subfolders in a folder. Imagine that.

As I wander, I found this app called “Path Finder”, a better Finder. It has some enhancements such as Tabbed Browsing (yep!), Path Navigator (breadcrumb) integrated Stuffit Engine, its own Desktop, and several built-in apps for viewing images, PDFs, and Word documents. It also has built-in support for FTP.I am quite pleased with Path Finder that I never use Finder again since.?

The feature I like most is its Tabbed Browsing Interface, that way I only need to open one windows, with tabs to many paths. The Path Navigator also proves invaluable. This is what Finder should be! So far, Path Finder is my number one File Management app on Mac.?

The new Finder, which will be inside Leopard sports CoverFlow as one of its views, in addition to Icons, List, and Columns View. Let’s see how it performs, if I need to open several windows again, then.. well..

Yeah, that’s true.. Is Terminal powerful? Sure. Is it easy to use? No. I certainly use Terminal for advanced tasks but if I just want to move a single file to /from two different folders it’s easier to drag-and-drop. And, if I insist to use Terminal, I can paste the paths to Terminal window, which requires me to open at least one Finder windows, and browsing to two folder just to get their paths. So, what’s the point of a Terminal open? I can just drag-and-drop ‘em. Well, that’s what I do. Anyway, Path Finder has built-in Terminal :)
