Following The Incident

Apr 13th 2008

In order to fix this annoying “bug”, I contacted someone from my hosting company. We talked a while about this strange thing happening lately. I can imagine he/she shook his/her head and probably scratch hairs too, for this is unbelievably.. unbelievable. This is the semi-complete story..

  1. I tried to update my web design, in order to do this I need to replace the original and outdated version on my server
  2. I fired up Firefox 2.0.0.13 and Fireftp 0.97.1, and navigate to the folder where the new files will be put replacing the old ones
  3. I uploaded the files and, of course, since there’s already files with the same names I was asked if I want to replace the old files or rename the new ones. I need not think a second about this
  4. So, bang, they were uploaded, and there’s even a notification, too, so far so good but what happens next is far more exciting than watching World-War II firsthand
  5. If I compare the files on the server (which I uploaded from my pc) and the files on my pc, some of the files’ size, modified date, and MD5 checksums are different! This means, some of the files *were* replaced and some were *not* replaced. See, interesting, isn’t it?
  6. Just in case I opened another browser, Opera 9.27 to see the change (this to avoid FF loads the page from its cache, which it won’t, by the way, because I never use any caches ever. But you know, just in case..)
  7. The layout, as I see in Opera, is just exactly as I intended except the styles! So some files, including the style.css file, is *not* updated

And so, after some talks, this and that, I was asked to mail it to the technical support staff. And I did, describing the things above quite passionately. I even included some screenshots and the files for them to work things out.

Miraculously, they figured it out! Out of sheer amazement I asked them what they did. And they replied, “We use another FTP client. It seems like there’s something wrong with yours.” Hmm.. okay.. WHAT? Right, I’ve thought of that too..

Update

It is confirmed, the problem lies somewhere in my ftp app, definitely. I try to use another ftp client apps and they worked like charm.
